Confessions of a Photoholic
Hello. My name is Shelley and I am a photoholic. I first started photographing when I was very young. It seemed harmless enough but the older I got the more it took over my life. Once upon a time, my addiction was curtailed by the cost of film, developing & printing. But since I got my first digital camera it has gone out of control. There’s no stopping me now!!
Does this sound like you?
The truth is, I do take way too many photos and there is a real danger of getting swamped by them. This is one of the reasons I love digital scrapbooking so much. Pages like this one, which has 46 (count them – 46!) photos are tailor made for me. Even I would get bored looking at 46 individual photos of pelicans, but to be able to showcase them all on one page is so … Read More
Connecting Across the Miles
A few weeks ago, I wrote about the memorial book I created for my sister, who died earlier this year. (Click here to read that post) She had married an Englishman, and lived in London for the past two decades. I ended up making 3 copies (so far) – one for my parents, one for my brother-in-law, and one for my married nephew. And I need to order one for myself! It is the photos that are powerful, and any good album (with journaling) would be equally meaningful, but the big advantage of StoryBooks in this situation is the ability to so easily duplicate my work.
I thought I would share the responses I received from her husband. This was the first email I got, about 2 weeks ago:
Thank you very much for the book. I have had a quick look at it and have seen how much it … Read More
Travelling at home.
I love to travel. I love the excitement of seeing new places, learning about the history & culture of different countries, testing my skills (or lack of) in other languages. I love beautiful scenery, quaint villages, ancient ruins, gothic cathedrals. I love sitting in cafes, enjoying local delicacies, and watching the world go by. Anything, in short, that is different. Experiencing the sights, sounds, and tastes of places far & wide – that is my idea of a good time. And taking photos of it all.
I love planning my trips. I spend hours & hours on the internet, choosing where to go, what to see, where to stay. No trip is ever long enough, and I want to make sure I don’t waste a second of it. And I enjoy the anticipation almost as much as the trip itself. It is so much fun to imagine myself in far … Read More
A Year to Forget – or Not.
It has been a difficult year in our household. This week marked the first anniversary of the death of my husband’s brother in a car accident. And 3 months ago my younger sister died of breast cancer. But this week we celebrated with joy the birth of my great-niece, although that too was tinged with sadness as baby Naomi would have been my sister’s first grandchild.
It won’t come as a surprise to you that I treasure my photos, and you know how passionate I am about the value of preserving those photos to enjoy today and pass on to future generations. But even I was taken aback by the importance that every single member of the family placed on photos following these tragic events. Everyone dug out their albums, shoeboxes (yes, I haven’t got through to them all yet!) and computers and together we laughed, cried and told stories. … Read More
